While it would be nice to buy a hybrid to save some dough, it may not be the right time to purchase a brand new vehicle. So here’s the next best thing. Forbes has compiled list of tips and tricks to save at the pump this summer, so you can drive down PCH in gorgeous southern California sunshine without an ounce of guilt.
Pay cash. A lot of service stations offer a 10 cent (per gallon) discount for paying cash, rounding out to approximately 2.5% savings.
Use that iPhone. GasBuddy and FuelFinder can help you find the nearest gas station with the lowest prices, no matter what your driving route.
Costco & Sam’s Club. Wholesalers offer cheaper prices, including gas, for membership holders.
Gas company loyalty cards. If you have a wide selection of chains close to you, apply for a loyalty card at your locals station. The BP Visa card, for example, offers a 5% rebate on all gas purchased at BP stations. Cash back cards, such as the Discover Open Road card could be another option.
Rent and electric car on vacation. Save money on your family’s summer vacation by renting an electric car- just make sure that the price to upgrade isn’t more expensive than gas costs.
Avoid buying fuel on the highway. Real estate along major routes is typically pricey, and those costs are passed along to gas prices. A few miles off the highway could save you 20 cents on the gallon.
Gas up before the holidays. Gas is always more expensive on holiday weekends- make sure you gas up before to save money.
